What are the differences between low and high detail?

RuneScape is a world with literally thousands of little embellishments, and we think it's a good idea for everyone to play in high detail mode so they see it in all its wonder. The main differences between low and high detail are:

  • Ground detail: In high detail, you'll see all sorts of extra objects littering the ground - from stones and uneven dirt to rugs and ornate tilework.
  • Water and lava: In low detail mode, water and lava are flat surfaces, devoid of the texture in high detail that make them seem more like an active body of water or a searing mass of molten rock.
  • Other floors: Floors other than the one you are on are removed in low detail, so it can seem that you are floating in space if you are in the upper level of a building.

Of course, there are a few reasons you might prefer low detail, such as the following:
  • Special effects: Some people prefer to use low detail in areas such as the Smoke Well in the Kharidian Desert. This is because there is a smoke effect across the viewing area in high detail.
  • Your computer's capabilities: Some very old computers have difficulty keeping up with the graphical intensity of high detail mode. Having said that, in many cases it is actually faster to use high detail mode because of the way areas are streamed automatically.

Have a look at the images below to see some of the differences between high and low detail.

View of the town of Witchaven in high detail.
In high detail mode, there is a great deal of ground detail as well as showing levels other than your current one. Note the scattered gravel, the texture of the water and the presence of upper floors and roofs on buildings.

View of the town of Witchaven in low detail.
In low detail mode, many of the interesting and characterful features of RuneScape are simply not loaded. Though it is still perfectly recognisable, you don't get to see the world as the designers intended it.

View of the tower at Barbarian Village in high detail.
From the upper floors of buildings you can see the levels below. Aside from the additional detail, this is very useful for navigating around an area that you've never been to before. It can also come in handy to identify how dangerous an area above or below might be.

View of the tower at Barbarian Village in low detail.
In low detail mode, levels aside from the one you are currently on are removed. In this instance, it denies you a view of the ground below, as well as removing the rather lovely thatch roof from the tower itself.
